I am not your typical photographer or photo studio. I have a different educational background and life experience than most. I spent many years studying sociology – obtaining my bachelors and masters degrees. The subject is truly all encompassing yet I think that I am drawn to it because it helps me to have greater compassion for individuals I encounter every day. Sociology is in me. Photography is what I do when I allow myself an indulgence. It was my solace during graduate school.
It wasn’t until I started pursuing a Ph.D. in Sociology at the University of Missouri that I took academic photo classes from the journalism school. At the same time, I started having children. As my free time became more difficult to come by, I decided that it was time to pursue the subject that invigorated me more than any other: photography. After taking some classes from the j-school, I began assisting a couple of local photographers who nurtured my desire to make pictures (www.silverboxphotographers.com). After working with them for a few seasons, I decided it was time to take on some weddings of my own. I have photographed 24 weddings.
I approach photography, especially wedding photography, with the intent of creating a ‘photo journal’ for you. I want you to look back at your photos and be reminded of all of the little details that made your wedding day so uniquely you. Some couples spend years planning their wedding day. When that day finally comes, it passes so quickly that it is impossible to take it all in. My job as your photographer is not only to document the details, but to artfully capture the emotion and joy of the moment. I do not like to pose pictures generally, but family group shots seem to be a requirement at weddings. I will photograph things as they happen and you will never hear me say, “Do that again!” The more authentic you are on your wedding day, the better your pictures will be.
I am a photographer because I love it. Being behind a camera, looking for
that moment, looking for beauty in the details of life, enriches my life.
I have three small children and a husband that I adore (see ‘personal’
page). Photography is the cherry on top.
